Backup software Silent mode – means that there are no displays on Windows or Task Bar icons. The system literally runs “silently” in the background.
Event Manager – alerts users to missed/failed backups. If a scheduled backup is missed, the next time the computer is started, the “missed event” will be displayed. Event Manager will try any unsuccessful complete backup again and will prompt the user to complete any backup which has failed due to network problems at a later date. Email notification - configuration of client software allows a status summary email to be sent to user(s); the email may even have a complete log file attached.
Multiple backup sets – Netstar’s software has the ability to create an unlimited number of backup sets, all of which can run independently at different times. This means that you can have backup data files configured to run at the end of the week and single database files configured to run several times a day.
Scheduling – helps automate the backup process and allows user data to be regularly backed up any time with no intervention. Users can configure backups at their own convenience.
Compression – Netbar uses FASTBit technology to accurately extract any changes to files since the last backup. The efficient FASTBit difference engine identifies and extracts binary level differences between two versions of any file and works on any file.
Firstly, the file is compressed and sent to our secure backup server. Any changes to that file subsequently received by the server are applied to your backup file ensuring that a complete up to date copy of the file is kept in the system. By opting for a FASTBit Patch backup, your files can be stored separately on the server which allows you the flexibility of restoring a number of generations of a particular file. Encryption – Data is not only stored in an encrypted format, all communication between the client and server is also encrypted. "What does encryption do?" It allows a user to specify an ACCESS CODE/PASSWORD before computer data can be read. Types of Encryption software At present, there a three types of encryption algorithms on the market and all are exportable i.e. can be used by International customers.
Communications – Data is communicated between the user and server across the Internet and, to prevent unauthorised interception of data, DATBar client software negotiates a compatible set of encryption methods upon initial connection before any information or user data is sent to the server. All user communication during either an entire backup or restoration process is completely encrypted. Storage on the server – Once data is received by the server, it is stored on disk in encrypted format and, to ensure complete security, filenames are also encrypted. Unauthorised users cannot gain access to data files; therefore, in the event of physical storage devices falling into the hands of an unauthorised user, data is protected. User Authentication – once there is an encrypted connection between the client and server, Client software sends the username and password to the server for validation against Windows NT user database (a standard secure database of users allowing quick validation). Backend system No system is 100% foolproof! Netstar appreciate how invaluable your data is and, in order to provide our customers with additional protection, we offer a third archived offsite copy of their data. This copy is created by Best of Breed Backup (BBOB) developed exclusively for Databarracks by leading Security Company AL DIGITAL, BBOB is a scaleable online archive facility which can store data up to 7 years behind a dedicated, hard firewall which is itself, constantly monitored and updated. BBOB data is stored separately from primary online storage and clients do not have direct access. However, following a request, Databarracks can make data available to client’s online account within 6 hours. BBOB allows a faster reintroduction of archive data than traditional tape storage. Monitoring There are two software packages available to monitor the system: Nagios and Quest Spotlight Nagios: is an open source host service and network monitoring programme. If any problems are encountered, the daemon sends out notifications to administrative contacts via email and SMS texting. Current status information, historical logs and reports are all accessed via a web browser. Nagios has many features, amongst which are:
Quest spotlight: For UNIX, graphically displays in real time the actual flow of data in our UNIX systems — including: I/O subsystem, cache and kernel information. This enables Netstar to identify congested areas and quickly respond to performance problems before they become a major concern. Spotlight also has a learning facility that automatically sets a baseline of normal activity for each system; allowing it to automatically set thresholds and send an audible or visual warning of impending problems. With these advanced notifications, we can proactively eliminate bottlenecks before they seriously impact end users. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
