Ensure Internet Slow Downs Don’t Affect Your Business

April 11th, 2013 - Category - IT Blog, IT Security

The internet has recently been slowed down in one of the largest cyber attacks in history. Disrupting popular sites such as TV streaming platform Netflix, security experts believe web browsing and email could be affected if the attack were to continue.

The feud began when Spamhaus (a non-profit organisation which helps email providers filter out spam) blocked servers maintained by Dutch web-hosting company Cyberbunker.

Based in Geneva and London, Spamhaus has a database of severs which are specifically used for malicious purposes, including sending spam mail to promote bogus products.

In retaliation, Cyberbunker launched a Denial of Service Attack and flooded its severs with traffic, much like jamming a letterbox with hundreds of letters at one time.

Cyber attacks such as these are a major threat to organisations which rely on the internet.  Online banking sites such as Natwest and RBS are just some of the companies experiencing problems, although it is unknown whether or not this is down to the attack.

Maximising Your Internet Connection

It’s important not to think the worst as a slow running internet connection can be caused by a whole host of issues. Some basic maintenance will help maximise your connection:

  • PC Maintenance: Ensure all your updates are in place and run a virus/malware scan. Delete any old files and empty your recycle bin. Optimising your cache or temporary internet files will also help. Connection speeds are often slow because other programs are accessing the internet without your knowledge. To test this click Start – Run and type cmd netstat –b5 > activity.txt, then hold down Ctrl and press C. This will create a file listing all programs which use your internet connection. To view the file simply type activity.txt.
  • Equipment Maintenance: When experiencing a slow connection you should first reset your network. It may sound simple, but a quick reboot can often improve your internet speed. Ensure all PCs are properly connected and if any equipment is problematic, consider upgrading to something more reliable.
  • Extra Tips: An up-to-date malware protection system is always advisable and there are many downloadable programs designed to make web browsing quicker. Firefox in particular have many apps and options to speed up browsing.

Well maintained PCs run faster and much more effectively compared to computers that are neglected. However, many businesses simply don’t have the time to worry about such tasks, which is why it is a good idea to enlist the help of IT support experts.
