1. Why does my laptop keep turning off?

There are multiple reasons why your laptop might keep turning off. Here’s some potential causes and solutions that you can try to prevent your laptop from turning off. They include, overheating, hardware failure, overclocking, a virus and a broken charger.

Overheating

If your laptop gets too hot, it may keep turning off as you’re trying to use it. The internal hardware of your laptop will naturally generate heat, which is why a fan is there to cool it down. However, if your fan isn’t working correctly, your laptop will overheat, causing it to spontaneously turn off.

To combat overheating, you can:

  • Keep your laptop on a cool, clean, flat surface that’s free of dust
  • Keep your vents uncovered and remove objects that are too close to your laptop – you can try putting your laptop on a laptop stand so there’s a gap between the desk and the laptop
  • Take a break from using it to give it a chance to cool down
  • Ask an IT professional to disassemble your laptop and clean the fan (if you’re a Netstar client, we can help with this!)
  • Invest in a laptop cooling pad, like this one on Amazon

Hardware failure

If your laptop isn’t overheating, the root of your problem may be because your hardware is failing. An easy way to check for hardware errors is to go to Device Manager and see if any errors have been reported (for Macs this will be under System Information). This would be a good starting point to try find out whether you need to take any further action to resolve the problem.

If you do notice any errors or suspect that any internal components may be failing, you should get in touch with your IT support partner. They will have the skills and knowledge to inspect your machine, detect any errors, and resolve them.

Overclocking

Overclocking refers to when your laptop’s processor is running at a higher speed than intended by its manufacturer. It’s unlikely, but your laptop may have overclocking enabled. This can cause your laptop to become unstable during more intense activities, such as gaming or video processing, causing it to keep turning off.

An IT professional will be able to help you identify whether overclocking is enabled and disable it if needed.

A virus

If you don’t have the right cyber security measures in place, viruses can infiltrate your system, causing your device to fail in a number of ways. This could include causing your laptop to keep turning off.

The best way to prevent viruses impacting your devices is to have a multi-layered security strategy in place, with advanced technology to combat cybercrime. Your IT partner will be able to advise you further on this.

A broken charger

Your device will have its own specific charger. If you use a different charger, or your charger is damaged, a lower voltage or higher current adapter could impact the functionality of your laptop, causing it to shut down. This is especially common if you’re using your laptop for intensive activities such as gaming.

If you suspect your charger may be the problem, we advise buying a new one that’s specific to the make and model of your laptop.

2. Why is my laptop fan so loud?

Laptop fans are there for one thing; to cool down your device and prevent overheating. If your laptop fan is making a lot of noise, it usually means it’s doing its job and dissipating heat. However, if your laptop fan is persistently louder than usual, there are some specific actions you can take…

Close unused apps

If you have lots of different apps open, your laptop may be overworked and overheated. You can, therefore, close anything down that you’re not currently using. Here’s where to go to view open applications and close them down for different operating systems:

  • Windows – Task Manager
  • Mac – Activity Monitor

Cool it down

It’s advisable to keep your laptop on a cool, clean, flat surface, especially when it’s in use. You can also invest in a laptop cooling pad to help regulate the heat of your laptop, although bear in mind that this is only a short-term solution to an overheated device.

Keep it clean

Dust and debris getting trapped in the vents and ports of your laptop can cause it to overheat, making your fan louder than usual. As mentioned, it’s important to keep your laptop on a clean surface and remove any objects that may be covering your vents. If the problem persists, you can ask an IT expert to dissemble your laptop and clean your fan for you.

Ask for expert help

If none of the methods above have helped to reduce your fan volume, there may be a more serious issue present. In which case, we would recommend getting in touch with an IT expert who can help diagnose and solve the problem. If your issue relates to a work device, you should contact your internal or outsourced IT support team.

3. Why does my laptop keep disconnecting from the internet?

If your laptop keeps disconnecting from the internet, there are a few things you can try to resolve the issue. If the problem persists, we recommend contacting your internet services provider or IT partner for assistance.

  • Run the network troubleshooter – Windows troubleshooter is designed to help fix connectivity issues. Navigate to Start > Network Status > Run the troubleshooter and then follow the onscreen instructions. For Macs you can do this by navigating to Wireless Diagnostics via the Spotlight search function.
  • Restart your laptop and WiFi router – This will help reset the network settings and may fix the issue. When you turn off your device and router, make sure to also disconnect the power cable and leave for at least one minute before plugging in and switching on again. If you’re in a shared office, don’t try and disconnect the WiFi as it may prevent others from working.
  • Switch from a public to private network – Navigate to Network Status > Properties and select Private. This may help with internet connectivity problems.

If none of these methods have stopped your laptop disconnecting from the internet, you should consult an IT expert or your internet provider, who should be able to give you further insight and solve the problem.

4. What laptop do I have?

You may need to find out your laptop’s model number to discover its specifications or use for compliance or troubleshooting reasons.

In most cases, it should be easy to decipher what laptop you have. Simply turn your laptop upside down and look for a logo alongside some small text. This should outline the brand and model of your laptop, e.g., “Acer Aspire 5517”.

If you can’t find your model number that way, you can navigate to Control Panel > System – all the information you need should be displayed under Device Specifications here.

What is a 2 in 1 laptop?

A 2 in 1 laptop is essentially a portable computer that has the same features and capabilities as both a laptop and a tablet. They are otherwise known as a convertible laptop, 2 in 1 tablet, detachable laptop, tabtop, or a laptop tablet.

2 in 1 laptops include touch-sensitive, flexible screens that can be flipped, as well as full PC operating systems and keyboards. They tend to be slimmer than an ordinary laptop but with the same internal components (e.g. battery/storage drive) and external slots (USB ports/DVD drawer). They also feature a tablet interface that provides additional viewing and input options.

The hybrid design benefits those who are on the go or tend to work from anywhere, as they’re often a lot lighter and more portable than standard laptops.
